Tastefully Inspired reaches the four corners of the earth and we pride ourselves on providing valuable content to our readers, no matter where they are. Today, we are proud to introduce you to the first writer in our new series, Young Writers and Designers. Zoe P. is a young writer who is passionate about literature and blog writing. She covers a handful of topics that she feels passionate about. So, without further adieu, let’s hear what Zoe has to share with us about painting your home.
What to Consider Before Painting Any Part of the Home
Every now and then, a new design project or remodeling effort in the home can be just what is needed to restore its allure and appeal. Without careful and consistent maintenance, any home can fall into disrepair along multiple lines. We most often think about the mechanical and structural needs of a house, but the aesthetic components are just as important in terms of long-term value.
Whether you just bought a fixer-upper or you’re wanting to ensure your home’s value continues to grow, a new paint job goes a long way toward improving its appeal. However, painting any portion of the home isn’t as easy as some might think.
Because of these concerns, let’s look at some things you should consider before painting any segment of your house.
Account for Safety
In the US alone, there are thousands of painting accidents each year while rejuvenating the exterior and/or interior of the home. The most common type of injury involves falling off of a ladder, but there are other ways that injuries can occur when painting. Be sure to have a foolproof plan that involves securing any surface on which you are standing, avoiding any toxic fumes from the project itself and eliminating the chances of being cut or harmed by equipment used.
Be Realistic About Costs
Many people see a can of paint in the store and think to themselves, “this won’t cost much at all!”. However, there is much more to painting a room or home than the paint itself. You’ll need proper brushes, pans, painter’s tape, and other accessories such as a ladder, spare clothing and a drop to cover surfaces. You’ll also probably need more paint than you initially think (visit https://porch.com/project-cost/cost-to-paint-rooms for more information on painting costs).
Consider Color Variance
Just because you fall in love with a color in the store doesn’t mean it’s the right color for your home. Any particular color can look different depending on lighting or even how it dries. Paint samples are available at virtually every hardware store to help make this process easier, but even then, a variety of factors can impact what color your walls ultimately reflect.
Understand the Preparation Process
A lot goes into preparing for the painting process – and a good deal of it happens before you even begin laying the first coat of paint! Between sanding, priming, protecting surfaces, ventilating the area properly and preparing the paint itself, there can potentially be hours of labor involved before any paint whatsoever is applied. Any project that involves painting the home should be done only when you have a full free day at minimum to cover all the bases.
Know Your Sheen
Different types of paint exist for different rooms and applications. Do you know whether a matte, flat or satin finish is most ideal for your room or surface? If you are unaware of the differences, then researching the differences between paint sheens is vital for the best outcome. Lighting, weather/exposure and desired lifespan are just a few factors you must consider when selecting the right type of paint.
Now that you’re aware of several considerations to evaluate before painting, you’ll be better prepared to make the right choices. Painting any room or home can take a lot of time, preparation and can potentially be expensive. Whether you choose to trust such a project to the professionals or handle it yourself, be sure to consider all of these factors.
