Lighting design is something very special when it comes to hospitality or interior design. Companies like Restoration Hardware work with some of the most ingenious lighting designers in the world, which is kind of funny because I think a lot of people overlook the lighting in a room. Now I don’t mean the type of lighting as in hard or soft light. What I am referring to are the lamps, sconces and any other thing that is hanging or attached to the structure. The idea here is that you have a beautiful room, amazing colors and fabulous furniture…so why not upgrade the room with some fantastic lighting fixtures?
Now I’m going to tell everyone something that they can’t repeat. I had no idea what a sconce was before I began working in interior design. I mean I’ve heard of scones and I’ve even eaten a few, but sconces? This word was new to me and a word that left me puzzled. Now we all know how snotty the design industry is so there was no way I was going to ask anyone. I did my research and studied up on some of the best lighting designers in the world and finally found out what a sconce was.
There are some designers that select to work solely is the category lighting. Most people that work in licensing understand that there’s big bucks associated with that category. When you walk into one of the top hotels in the world, lighting tends to be something you notice right away. The chandelier can capture your gaze and the little details on the lighting fixtures can make something functionally normal into something memorable.
When it comes to choosing the proper light fixtures and accents for your house, you have to be very careful that you do not go overboard. A huge lighting fixture in the wrong place can really come off odd. You have to play it smart with lighting and always play the cards you are dealt. If you do this right, any room can be taken to the next level. Remember when you’re working in interior design, the smallest detail can go along way. And details make a room, hotel or resort amazing. Also, a nice swim up bar never hurts.
“When it comes to light fixtures, I say the bigger the better. A light fixture that is too small will look out of place in a room, but lighting designers know exactly how to play with scale to make a larger-than-life light fixture work.” Karina Jones
So who are these lighting gurus? How did they get to design some of the most amazing lighting in the world? To be honest, some dabble in this category and then others decide to only do lighting. But understand one thing, if you do work in lighting …licensing your lighting design is how you make your money. Today I want to show you some of the most amazing lighting that I’ve ever seen. Like anything in design, everyone’s got an opinion so I really want to hear yours. Again, I really do know what I like but I’m smart enough to understand that I haven’t seen everything yet. Enjoy the visual and the lighting show.
