One of my favorite places in the world is the Caribbean. To be less than exact, anywhere in the small chain of islands they call the Virgin Islands. Be it the British, or the USVI’s, I can’t imagine a more picturesque place. My first experience with the islands was on a big, non-descript cruise, or more aptly put, it was the magic that happened after our first night. We sailed down during the night hours to the gorgeous island of Tortola and woke up in paradise. As I peered out the tiny porthole that first morning, my eyes were filled with a color I had never seen before and also, tears at the stunning beauty of it. The color of the Caribbean water was practically indescribable and my life was forever changed that day. Arriving in the British Virgin Islands after leaving mounds of snow and colorless skies behind in the US, not only was the water beckoning, but the world was alive with color. Those rich hues; cerulean waters, tropical green palms and of course, the charming and whimsically painted cottages dotting the hills…paradise or heaven on earth, take your pick.
Because of my infatuation with the Caribbean, I make sure I have a little piece of paradise to remind me of it when decorating my home. Whether it’s a liberal application of color as an accent wall or cheery throw pillows and driftwood decor, I always have an area in my home that keeps the Caribbean vibe alive. Bringing the tropical feel in doesn’t mean you have to have tacky palm tree nic-nacs and shell ensconced mirrors scattered around. These days, some of the tropical home décor, is downright gorgeous.
Driftwood is a unique and versatile accent. This coffee table by Crate & Barrel is a great option to bring the coastal feel inside in a fashionable way.
These Hay Needle Caribbean Inspired Throw Pillows can bring a drab room to life.
Even this stunning rug from Pier 1 brings in the coastal feel without being tacky or cheesy.
There are so many ways to decorate your home with Caribbean flavor without feeling like you’re in a tiki bar. I love having things around me that remind me of that wonderful trip to the islands. Things that evoke a feeling of relaxation and fond memories.
