Using Maps for Interior Design & Home Decor
If traveling is a huge part of your life, having a map in your home can serve as a wonderful reminder of your travels. Even if it’s not, maps are tangible evidence that there is a huge world out there to explore!
Having been raised in a big city like New York has often made me wonder what it would be like to have been from a small town. Would I be more approachable or would I be more naïve? Would I see more of the best in people?
Maybe maps don’t make you ask yourself probing life questions, but framed vintage maps, globes, map inspired wallpaper, wood-carved maps and murals of maps are incredible ways to incorporate maps in your home. To make things more personal, you can opt to frame local maps of places you love to visit or places you grew up in. For a more artistic look, you can use black and white versions of maps.
Here are my 4 reasons to include maps in your décor. – Karina
- It pays homage to your ancestry.
Many of you know that I originally hail from the country of Panama. Every time I look at the map in my hallway, I am reminded of my heritage and ethnicity. It makes me proud to know that there is somewhere else in this world that I can call home.
- When you observe it, you learn something new.
I don’t know about you but I didn’t even know that Barbuda was a place until I heard it was tragically destroyed as a result of Hurricane Harvey. There are so many small countries that we have never even heard of that a map can give you access to.
- It gives you perspective.
It is easy to get caught up with our own town or city and forget that what we deem as problems in our country are non-factors in other countries. For instance, the fact that the iPhone X is about to drop is unimportant to people who don’t have access to clean drinking water. Knowing that makes me appreciate my space in the world just a little bit more.
- You can teach your children geography in a fun way.
Exposing children early on to maps opens up their minds to geography from an early age. Understanding that we are in a town that is a part of a city, which is a part of a state inside of a country is difficult for children to understand. This is a great way to teach this concept to them.
