There is nothing that I love to see in a room more than custom drapery. Without window treatments, a room can seem cold, barren and even unfinished. Custom draperies are the perfect furnishing to make your space look warm, inviting and polished.
I know what you’re thinking, “Custom draperies are too expensive.” Compared to store purchased drapes, they really are, but the investment is so worth it. Even high-end stock drapery is no match for custom drapery. I have purchased panels that are $150 each and they still do not deliver the impact that custom drapery does. Here are my six top reasons for why custom drapery is the way to go.
1. Floors are almost never level.
If you have ever purchased several identical stock panels, installed them at multiple windows in the same room, and found the panels to be different lengths, you may have experienced this issue. When a house settles, the floors tend to be higher on one side than another, which means that even if your drapery rods are perfectly level, the drapes will end up being different lengths on the floor. With custom drapery, this issue is non-existent because the workroom accounts for an unleveled floor.
2. The bottoms hang perfectly.
Sometimes when you hang stock drapes they fan out at the bottom instead of hanging perfectly straight. This can be due to the insufficient weight of the fabric or the fact that the drapery has no hem weights. With custom drapes you can request hem weights so that you don’t encounter this problem. These weights are installed in the hem of the drapes which helps them hang effortlessly.
3. You can customize them.
The best part about investing in custom drapery is that you can customize it by color blocking (adding one color to the top and another to the bottom), adding borders or adding banding. With custom drapery, you can make sure that no one has the same drapes that you do. In addition, you can have throw pillows made out of the same fabric to make the space look more cohesive and well planned.
4. You can line them to get your preferred sunlight levels.
Another advantage of custom drapery is that you can line it in different ways, from lightweight to blackout. This is especially important when you are using fabrics that are susceptible to sun damage such as silk. You can double line your drapes so that they help with temperature control. You can self-line them, which means that the way the drapery looks inside the house is how it will appear from the outside. There are so many possibilities with custom drapery.
5. You can make them the length perfect for your ceilings.
Although most stock drapes come in 84”, 96” and 108”, sometimes what you want is not available in the length you need it in. The 108” length or more is much harder to find and rarely do these stringent heights actually work in a space. Designers hang drapes as high as they can get them and if they have to account for an additional 6” of crown molding, the store purchased drapes will not be at the height they envisioned. Custom drapes can be made in the exact height that you desire.
6. You can get the fullness you desire.
With stock drapery, the width of the drape is predetermined, usually about 50″. With custom drapes, you can increase what is known as the fullness so that the drapes are one and a half times as wide, twice as wide or more so that you can fully close the drapes. This feature also helps the drapes look more full when you pull them back.
I can go on and on all day about reasons to purchase custom drapery instead of store bought drapery. There are so many wonderful options that are available with custom drapes that you cannot get with stock drapes. While custom drapes are an investment, it is one you will never regret.
