OK., before you start cussing me out because now you have “that song” stuck in your head…OK, fine! Get it out of your system. All better? Then let’s go…
Perhaps you have seen them. The leviathan structures of quartz, marble, granite that are enveloping kitchen islands left and right. They are grand and contemporary and just downright sexy! You might be surprised to find out that not only are they gorgeous, they’re functional as well (at least that’s what we are going to tell our significant other when we discuss the budget).
But, Honey, the waterfall edges are waterproof and will protect those exotic, African Bubinga wood cabinets that you just HAD to have.
But don’t think that you are limited to just a variety of high end stone. Check out this stainless-steel beauty!
And this butcher block waterfall!
There has been some debate as to whether this style of countertop will be too trendy or dated in the future and I have received mixed opinions on this matter. Interior designers have expressed to me a range of opinions from “waterfall counters are the new classic and are here to stay” to “they are already on the way out.” It’s difficult to say without a time machine. (And truthfully, if I had a time machine, this wouldn’t be my first priority). That being said, I personally took the plunge and you can read about it here…
If you do decide to add this gorgeous and dramatic feature to your kitchen or bath, here are some things to consider:
- Don’t go cheap. Choose a high-quality stone and an experienced fabricator. The cuts needed to accomplish your waterfall counter are a bit involved and you want them done right.
- Consider Quartz over granite. Your waterfall edges may be more vulnerable to chips and scratches just due to the fact that the surface is more exposed to everyday life. Pets, steel toed boots, errant vacuums are all a part of Murphy’s Law. Quartz tends to rate stronger on the hardness scale and resists chipping a bit better. (That is, if you’re not going for a more exotic choice like marble or African Bubinga.)
Waterfall countertops make and extraordinary statement and will undoubtable be the shining star of your space if you choose to pull the trigger.
