This is a battle that I saw coming for a long time. Can “Do It Yourself Designers” and “Design Professionals” get along? I respect what a professional designer can do on every level. A professional designer has mastered their art through years of training and work experience. As I said numerous times interior design, product design, landscape design and hospitality design are art forms. You can pick up a copy of any trade magazine and the proof is in these amazing images. Some of my good friends are epic designers who I am in amazement of on a daily basis.
Now on the other side of that coin I grew up in a small apartment in San Francisco. My family didn’t have a lot of money and my mother kept a beautiful home. She decorated, designed and created on a budget that would make most people laugh. We couldn’t afford to hire a professional but my mother still wanted to provide beauty in our home. My mother was a DIY Decorator and until this day some of my fondest memories are of some of her arrangements that she found here and there.
For me I’m a very relaxed person and I really hope there’s a way we can all win. The DIY market is growing fast and there is no way to stop that. Right now if you are a professional designer you really need to step up your game by marketing your brand. As a marketer I checked out is this #DOITFOR initiative. If this is going to make a dent at all in the design industry they really need to step up their game. I’m myself searched for the hash tag on Instagram and I must say not a great start but you never know.
For me as a design lover I want my industry to always shine light on the best and the brightest. Will this #DOITFOR do just that? It is too early to tell but here is the link so tell me what you think! #DOITFOR
