Lately I have been obsessed with flowers so much so that it is driving my family a bit crazy. It all began with an article I read about one of my favorite San Francisco icon’s Ken Fulk. He said this very short but very inspirational quote.
“We create experiences.” Ken Fulk
Why not create an ever changing experience that can rotate with colors and smells whenever you want? Imagine you have a room of white, beige and some browns. Now you look at the room and love it but wonder what would color do for the energy, feel and ambiance? So why not shoot down to your local florist and pick up some snapdragons or some orchids to set the tone? Ask any designer and they will tell you that flowers, light and color set the tone. I find that adding flowers can give a room that certain pop … also experimenting with flowers in less expensive than paint.
The truth is once you start adding flowers to your rooms you will be hooked and need them instead of just want them. It is almost like pairing a great wine to a meal. You need to look at the room and test a bit to find the perfect feel and energy. Also believe me a room has its mood and with various different floral arrangements you can really see this come out.
I love seeing what types of flowers get the best reactions at parties or even just drop a few in certain rooms at my friends houses to see what they have to say. You really cannot go wrong with flowers and for the price they really cannot be beat. One of the most amazing spots for flowers is the San Francisco Flower Mart. You can get some exotic flowers from all around the world that will certainly make your room stand out. There is something about San Francisco and flowers that go hand in hand!
Just a quick FYI, the photo above is from Barbara Barry’s book Around Beauty so please enjoy the visual and think of all the possibilities. David Meredith shot this photograph and in my opinion is truly gifted in being able to pair the right flowers with the right room. Since he shot all the photographs for her book Around Beauty I would suggest checking out this gem. This book is a must for anyone who loves design and florals. Shameless plug but I love Barbara Barry and when she works with David Meredith it is truly magic.
On a side note I hope everyone has an inspired and creative weekend and if you are on the plane home from Maison & Objet I hope the hangover isn’t too bad!
