I was looking over this quote by Winston Churchill that explained how you define your home and your home defines you. Then I saw an inspirational video on Shawn Henderson and it clicked. Not only is Shawn talented but also he gets that his clients want a home that reflects who they are.
Shawn is not about the clutter he’s not about the trends. Shawn’s goal is to make sure that the environment he creates reflects the people living there and based on the photos below I think he does an amazing job. One of the things that stood out to me about Shawn is that he is steadfast on his love for neutral colors and clean lines.
“I create interiors that feel comfortably sophisticated, rich and relaxed… Interiors that inspire you daily through nuance, harmony and contrasts… Interiors that reflect your needs and spirit… Interiors that truly feel like home.” (Shawn Henderson)
Shawn’s work has been published in Architectural Digest, Veranda, Elle Decor, Luxe, House Beautiful, The New York Times and NY Spaces. Shawn also had the great honor of being named to the AD100, Architectural Digest’s annual compendium of the world’s top designers.
MM: What manufacturer would you love to team up with and why?
SH: I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO TEAM UP WITH REMAINS LIGHTING TO DO A LINE OF LAMPS THAT HAVE A MULTIFUNCTIONAL CAPACITY TO THEM. THERE’S NOTHING OUT THERE LIKE THAT AND REMAINS MAKES BEAUTIFUL PRODUCTS.
MM: Who is the designer that you admire and how have they influenced your design work?
SH: THAD HAYES. AFTER WORKING FOR HIM FOR OVER 4 YEARS, IT COMPLETELY SHAPED HOW I THINK ABOUT DESIGN. HE ALWAYS PREACHED THAT LESS WAS MORE. I COULDN’T AGREE MORE. I DON’T LIKE AN OVERLY DECORATED ROOM.
MM: What is a design tip you live by?
SH: I ALWAYS SAY TO JUST MAKE IT PRETTY. WHATEVER THAT MEANS TO YOU!
MM: What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
SH: COFFEE! I LIVE FOR IT…AND MY TWO DOGS.
MM: What is your favorite vacation spot and can you recommend a place to visit or stay there?
SH: MEXICO- I’VE BEEN GOING TO TULUM FOR 12 YEARS. I LOVE IT THERE AS DOES THE REST OF THE COUNTRY NOW. I’M STARTING TO EXPLORE OTHER AREAS OF MEXICO. I RECENTLY WENT TO ISLA HOLBOX AND THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL.
MM: What happens in your initial meeting with a client?
SH: I WALK THEM THROUGH MY DESIGN PROCESS AND TRY TO GET A FEEL FOR THEIR PERSONALITIES TO SEE IF WE’D BE A GOOD FIT TO WORK TOGETHER.
MM: How do you communicate your vision to the client?
SH: ALL DIFFERENT WAYS- HAND SKETCHES, INSPIRATION IMAGES FROM BOOKS AND LOTS OF MATERIALS & IMAGES OF ART MIXED IN.
MM: What you like most about your home?
SH: MY HOME UPSTATE IS INCREDIBLY RELAXING. I’VE FINALLY GOTTEN IT TO A POINT WHERE I LOVE EVERYTHING AND MY MIND CAN ACTUALLY REST. WHEN I WAS DESIGNING IT, I ENVISIONED A MORE SOPHISTICATED VERSION OF A SWEDISH COUNTRY HOME.
MM: How would you describe your sense of style?
SH: I’M A MODERNIST AT HEART, BUT I HAVE A STRONG ADMIRATION AND RESPECT FOR TRADITIONAL DESIGN.
MM: Do you have a favourite colour scheme?
SH: I LOVE COLORS THAT ARE SLIGHTLY OBSCURE. OFTEN THEY HAVE A MORE MUTED TONE TO THEM. EXCEPT LATELY I’M A HUGE FAN OF YVES KLEIN BLUE AND MUSTARD YELLOWS (NOT TOGETHER, OF COURSE).
