What manufacturer would you love to team up with and why?
BDDW. Their artistry in transforming classic materials into functional works of art is inspiring. Being part of the inner workings of that creative process from concept to execution would be thrilling.
Who is the designer that you admire and how have they influenced your design work?
Thomas O’Brien. Any time I find myself drawn to a particular light fixture, rug or furniture piece, more often than not, it’s of his hand. He has a modern aesthetic with these amazing classical details distilled down and re-imagined. We strive to weave into our own designs a blending of modern and classic touches to imbue character and warmth.
What is a design tip you live by?
Incorporate some nature into every room. I am drawn to anything organic – a sea fan, fresh cut flowers, polished stones, rough-hewn wood. There is something very grounding in having these objects close at hand.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
It’s a common answer I realize, but coffee. My parents never drank it growing up. During college I travelled abroad and lived with a host family in Luxembourg. They forced me to try it and I’ve been addicted ever since.
What is your favorite vacation spot and can you recommend a place to visit or stay there?
Any place I can commune with nature. I live in a big city, so when I can get out into a landscape with a view of water or mountains or trees, I’m happy. My favorite places are Turks & Caicos, Costa Rica and any place in the mountains out West.
What happens in your initial meeting with a client?
Space is at a premium in Chicago and every bit of it needs to work hard. We have an exploratory list of questions designed to identify the client’s lifestyle, functional needs and desired feeling they want the space to evoke. Our end goal is a space perfectly suited to them and their lifestyle.
How do you communicate your vision to the client?
Drawings, inspiration pictures, mood boards, sketches…any vehicle we need to accurately convey the vision so they fully understand the concept.
Describe what you like most about your home.
We live in a classic Chicago bungalow that we renovated from top to bottom. I like that the feeling of the interior is in keeping with the exterior – loads of character, classic details, craftsmanship and warmth.
How would you describe your sense of style?
I love a modern aesthetic with clean lines. But not something cold and sterile. It has to have warmth with layered textures, contrasts, and differing natural materials to keep it interesting and comfortable.
Do you have a favourite colour scheme?
Layered neutrals, with contrasting materials and tones to create the interest. We also have an obsessive love of jewel tones currently – emerald green and indigo in particular.
